3 Steps to Safely Greet a New Dog

When you meet someone with a dog, make sure you ask before you pet their dog. If they say no, thank them and respect their wishes. If they say yes, follow these three simple rules:

1. Do not approach the dog, have the dog approach you. Hold your hand out, towards the dog, so the dog can move towards you to get petted.

2. Ask where the dog would like to be petted. Some dogs do not like to be patted on the top of their head. Most dogs enjoy long strokes along their side.

3. No doggy kisses. Do not put your face near the dog’s face.

After a few pets, thank the owner and the dog and move on. Use these rules to safely meet any new dog.
